Oral sedation uses a prescribed medication, taken by mouth before your appointment, to help you feel deeply relaxed. You stay awake and able to respond to us, but most patients feel calm, drowsy and at ease. Many remember very little of the visit afterward.
Oral sedation is different from general anesthesia. You are not put to sleep, and there are no needles needed for the sedation itself.
Oral sedation may be a good fit if you:
It isn’t right for everyone. We’ll talk with you first to see whether it’s a safe choice for you.
Your safety comes first. Before any sedation, we take time to understand your whole picture.
Before your visit. You’ll have a consultation so we can review your health and explain the process. We’ll give you your preparation instructions in writing.
The day of your visit. You’ll take your medication as directed and arrive with a trusted adult. Once you’re relaxed, we begin your treatment. We’ll check in with you often.
After your visit. You’ll rest while the effects wear off. Your driver takes you home, and you should plan to take it easy for the rest of the day. We’ll give you aftercare instructions and a number to call if you have any questions.
Sedation is one way we help you feel at ease. We also offer a calm, unhurried office, gentle techniques and clear explanations, so you always know what’s happening. We believe your comfort and your overall health go hand in hand.
Will I be asleep?
No. You’ll be awake and able to respond, but deeply relaxed. Many patients feel drowsy and remember little of the visit.
Is oral sedation safe?
When used appropriately and under professional care, it is considered a safe option for many patients. We review your health history and medications first to make sure it’s right for you.
How long does it take to wear off?
Most people feel drowsy for several hours afterward. We recommend resting for the remainder of the day.
Can I drive myself home?
No. You’ll need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you.
Can I eat before my appointment?
We’ll give you specific instructions before your visit. Please follow them closely.
Does insurance cover oral sedation?
Coverage varies by plan. Our team can help you check your benefits and talk through your options.
Can I have it for a simple cleaning?
Yes, if you need it. Tell us how you feel, and we’ll find the right approach for you.
