Nitrous oxide is a gas you breathe in through a small, soft mask that fits over your nose. It’s mixed with oxygen, and we adjust the amount to help you feel relaxed and comfortable. You stay awake and can talk with us the whole time.
It is a milder option than oral or IV sedation. Many patients describe a light, warm, floating feeling, and some feel a gentle tingling in their arms and legs.
Nitrous oxide may be a good choice if you:
It isn’t right for everyone, so we’ll review your health with you first to make sure it’s a good fit.
Before your visit. Tell us about your health, any medications and anything that worries you. Check with us if you’re pregnant, have a cold or stuffy nose, or have a breathing condition.
During your visit. We place the small mask over your nose and ask you to breathe normally. Within a few minutes, you begin to feel relaxed. We can raise or lower the gas at any time, depending on how you feel.
After your visit. When treatment is done, we give you pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear the gas from your system. Most patients feel back to normal shortly after and can usually drive themselves home.
Your safety and comfort guide everything we do.
Nitrous oxide is one of the ways we help you feel at ease. We also offer a calm, unhurried office, gentle techniques and clear explanations, so you always know what’s happening. We believe your comfort and your overall health go hand in hand.
