“Biomimetic” means imitating nature. In dentistry, it’s an approach that focuses on preserving healthy tooth structure and restoring the tooth to behave like a natural one.
Instead of removing extra tooth to hold a filling in place, we use tooth-colored composite resin that bonds directly to your tooth. This lets us remove only the decayed part and support the rest of the tooth.
BPA (bisphenol A) is a chemical used in some plastics and resins. Some dental materials contain it or are made from related compounds. Many patients, especially those who care about avoiding unnecessary chemical exposure, prefer to avoid it.
We choose composite materials made without BPA. Our fillings are also mercury-free. We’re happy to tell you exactly which material we use and answer your questions about what’s in it.
Biomimetic composite fillings may be right for you if you:
We’ll examine your tooth and talk with you about the best option. Some teeth need a crown or other treatment instead, and we’ll tell you if that’s the case.
Your exam. We examine your teeth, take any needed X-rays and talk through your options.
Numbing. We make sure the area is numb and you’re comfortable. If you feel nervous, ask us about relaxation options.
Removing the decay. We gently remove only the decayed part of your tooth.
Placing the filling. We prepare the tooth, then place the composite in thin layers and harden each with a special light. This builds a strong bond.
Shaping and polishing. We shape the filling, check your bite and polish it so it feels smooth and natural.
Most visits take about an hour, depending on the size of the filling. Afterward, you can usually eat and go about your day once the numbness wears off.
You may be wondering about older silver (amalgam) fillings. We don’t recommend removing a filling that’s in good condition just because of its material. If an old filling is cracked, leaking, worn or has decay beneath it, we can replace it with a biomimetic composite. We’ll always explain why and what to expect before we start.
With good care, composite fillings can last for many years. To help them last:
What makes a filling “biomimetic”?
It means we aim to imitate natural tooth structure. We save as much healthy tooth as we can and use a material that bonds to it, so the tooth stays strong and works as it should.
Are your fillings really BPA-free?
We choose composite materials made without BPA. If you have questions about a specific product, ask us and we’ll share what we use.
Do composite fillings contain mercury?
No. Composite fillings contain no mercury.
Are composite fillings safe?
Composite fillings are widely used and have been used in dentistry for decades. If you have a specific concern, such as an allergy or sensitivity, please tell us so we can choose the right material for you.
How long do composite fillings last?
It depends on the size of the filling, your bite, your habits and your home care. With good care, many last for years. We’ll check them at your regular visits.
